Although we are only 57 games into this season, there is one thing that can definitely be said: Scott Kingery has arrived. After a rookie season where Scott was thrown all around the diamond and had some struggles at the plate, he is finding new life in year two. This season, he looks more confident at the plate and has made the most of every opportunity that has been handed to him this season. Kingery is proving that he is here to be a cornerstone for the Phillies now and for the foreseeable future.
Scott Kingery’s 2018 season: .226 AVG, .267 OBP, 8 HR, 35 RBI
Scott Kingery’s 2019 season: .324 AVG, .365 OBP, 7 HR, 18 RBI
The numbers speak for themselves. Although the sample size of this season is much smaller, it is still quite apparent that Scott has made huge leaps in his sophomore season. At this point in the season last year, Kingery was batting .212 and had an on base percentage of .270. Along with raising his average and on base percentage a full .100 points, he is also showing some pop at the plate. We are only halfway through the month of June, and Kingery has already almost matched his home run total from all of last season. He is starting to look like the Scott Kingery that hit for average and launched close to 30 home runs during his season in the minor leagues.
More Than Just a Sweet Stroke
Along with improving his play at the plate, Kingery is also proving to be the team’s Swiss army knife. So far this season, Scott has logged at least four innings in center field, left field, second base, shortstop, and third base. Last season, he appeared in seven different positions that included logging an inning on the mound. For a player that pretty much spent all his time in the minors at one position, to come up to the majors and turn himself into a utility player is a testament to his work ethic and desire to be a vital piece to this team.
In a Phillies season that has been plagued with the injury bug, having a guy like Kingery on the roster is a huge asset. He has been proving all year that he can be placed anywhere on the field and it will not affect his play or his hitting. If he can keep up his work at the plate, he is going to provide good pop for this Phillies lineup at the back end of the order. Kingery brought a lot of hype with him with his great play in the minors and the big extension the team signed him too prior to last season, and now Phillies fans are getting the chance to see the Scott Kingery that they have been waiting for.
