It’s been months of acrimony between Philadelphia’s two star players. But, it appears as though some progress has been made in repairing the relationship between Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. During a meeting with Philadelphia’s brass on Friday, sources told The Painted Lines that Simmons approached Embiid for an embrace and the two shared a hug.
There is still so much left of this situation to play out. But, Embiid’s willingness to remain patient will likely go a long way in the franchise’s appetite for resisting unsatisfactory trade packages. For now, the situation seems to at least be trending towards tenability. It appears Simmons’ teammates are willing to rally around him. At this point, he’s trying to get to a place where he’s mentally ready to play for the team again.
After initial reports surfaced about the team’s meeting, Sixers forward Tobias Harris left no doubt as to whether the players will support the star guard:
And we’ll respect his privacy and space during this time. When he’s ready, we will embrace our brother with love and handle our business on the court. That's it, that's all. https://t.co/eardjmQbz8— Tobias Harris (@tobias31) October 22, 2021
Daryl Morey made the team’s steadfast strategy regarding trading Simmons clear yesterday. So, it seems a bit coincidental that there could be such a dramatic change in team dynamic the very next day. But, sources say that both sides seem optimistic on what will happen next.
Time will tell whether Simmons is agreeable to being integrated back into the team. For now, the Sixers host the Nets tonight at 7:30 PM EST. Simmons is listed out due to personal reasons.
