The Phillies have begun their work in trying to bolster the roster for the backend of the season and hopefully the playoffs. Recent reports have come out that a trade for Mariners OF Jay Bruce could be done within the next 24 hours. Bruce has appeared in 47 games for Seattle so far this season in which he is batting .250 with 14 home runs and 28 runs batted in. Although Bruce has been in the league for over a decade, adding his veteran presence could be a big help for the Phillies.
With all of the Odubel Herrera drama going on right now, adding another outfielder to the roster will help as the team continues to polish Scott Kingery into an outfielder. Bruce can also play first base which can help get Rhys Hoskins some much needed days off.
Over the course of his 11 year career, Bruce has also seen some playoff action. Although it is only a small sample size of 15 games, he is a career .250 hitter in the postseason. Having a guy like Bruce in the clubhouse will add experience to the bench and can be a mentor to the younger players.
This is not a blockbuster trade in any sort of sense, but it is one that needs to be made. Moving forward the Phillies are going to need guys on the bench who can come up late in games and make things happen if they want to contend this season. Jay Bruce can be a pinch hitting power bat and will also be a guy that can be put in the lineup when McCutchen and/or Hoskins need to get off their feet for a game.
