Major Need at CB
After two more corners went down in Thursday night’s game, Avonte Maddox and Sidney Jones, the Eagles had to address the CB position. Now this isn’t Jalen Ramsey news (yet), but the Eagles re-signed Orlando Scandrick. Scandrick was rumored to be a potential re-sign candidate after being released during roster cuts. He is veteran who knows the scheme and can come in and play until the corners get healthy. Jalen Mills can be activated week 7 after starting the season on the PUP due to the foot injury suffered last year. Cre’von LeBlanc still has an unknown return date after suffering a foot injury during training camp.
Cornerback is easily the Eagles’ weakest position on the team. The Eagles needed to do something quick. Now even though this isn’t a big name or anything, Scandrick should be able to step in and play against a weak Jets team at home in week 5. After this signing, the Eagles have three healthy corners: Rasul Douglas, Craig James, and now Orlando Scandrick. As of now, it is uncertain whether Sidney Jones or Avonte Maddox will be ready to for week 5. The Eagles will be in a lot of trouble if any of these three corners go down.
Abandoning the Fort
Releasing TJ Fort is a very interesting move. Eagles GM Howie Roseman named Fort a “top target” for the team this past offseason. Howie wasn’t lying, signing Fort to a 3 year $5.5 million contract with $1.9 million guaranteed. Fort did not even take a snap on defense in the first four games of the season. He only played on special teams. Cutting Fort, however, gives the Eagles a potential compensatory pick.
By cutting LJ Fort, the Eagles pick up a 4th round 2020 compensatory pick for one of either Golden Tate or Jordan Hicks, and simultaneously take off the board the Steelers' 3rd round 2020 comp pick for Le'Veon Bell. https://t.co/n4LThiDKpa— Nick Korte (@nickkorte) September 27, 2019
The Fort signing was a failure, but the Eagles were able to get a comp pick out of the ordeal, bringing the total number of draft picks in 2020 NFL Draft to 9. The Eagles could gain another comp pick by releasing safety Andrew Sendejo before week 10. It will be interesting to see how Scandrick steps up in these next few games. A potential Jalen Ramsey trade could shake up this signing, so keep an eye on that. For now however, the Eagles have over a week to get healthy and be ready for week 5 when the New York Jets come to town.
