After a week of smooth and productive training camp practices, the 76ers unveiled their new lineup to fans. The annual Blue/White scrimmage took place at the 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington Delaware. The Fieldhouse is the home of the Delaware Blue Coats. For players like Norvel Pelle, Haywood Highsmith, Shake Milton, and Zhaire Smith, this court was nothing new. This was the first time, however, that Wilmington, Delaware has hosted the Sixers’ stars like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.
PGRA House Band
Saturday also served as the debut of the official Blue Coats house band. Paul Green, founder of the School of Rock and inspiration of the Hollywood movie of the same name, is a lifelong diehard Sixers fan. Now, he brings his world renown program to Wilmington.
“Feels like the culmination of my entire life’s work,” said Paul with a straight face. And to be honest, Paul is only partially joking. He has built a successful national franchise out of keeping the joy and love of rock-and-roll alive, but at heart he is a basketball fan. Green is a 76ers season ticket holder in Philadelphia for years since moving back to the area from Woodstock, NY.
In fact, Paul loves to tell the story of taking his son down to Philadelphia from Woodstock to see the Sixers play the Houston Rockets in 2017. That night and the experience in the arena led him to decide to move back to Philadelphia and begin the Paul Green Rock Academy.
Over the summer of 2019, Paul was looking for a way to deepen his relationship with the organization and also to provide his musicians with more opportunities to play live events in the area. The PGRA had toured with Jon Anderson of the legendary rock band Yes over the summer. The 76ers Fieldhouse presented an opportunity to play a consistent set of shows as the Blue Coats house band. “The Blue Coats have such a fantastic environment,” said Green when talking about his interactions with Larry Meli, Alex Yoh, Matt Murphy, and the other Coats front office staff.
Finally, when asked what he is looking forward to this season, Green said, “I’m excited to shoot some three pointers this year and work on my conditioning.”
