Kingery Plays Rehab Games with Reading, Prepares for Return to Big Leagues

Scott Kingery was batting .406 through 14 games to start the season for the Phillies. The former top-prospect who struggled in his 2018 rookie season looked to be proving that he belongs before a right-hamstring strain put him on the Injured List. He has been out with that injury since April 20th.

Kingery took another step closer to his return to the Majors the past few days, playing in a couple Minor League rehab games for Double-A Reading. He played second base on Thursday and split between center field and third base on Friday.

Positional Versatility

The ability to play multiple positions is something that the Phillies really like about Kingery. It is quite possible that he will be put into the “super utility” role when he returns, getting time at various spots across the diamond. The organization clearly wants Kingery to be ready for multiple positions, as shown by the three positions he played in his rehab starts.

After Thursday’s game, Kingery spoke about being prepared to play wherever the team wants him. He said, “I’m just going to be ready for every position. That’s how I’ve been preparing the whole season so far, so I’ll probably just take some reps everywhere and just be ready to go anywhere they want to put me.”

Getting Back into the Swing of Things

In the two games Kingery played in Reading, he was just one for eight at the plate. However, the results in these games are not too important to the 25 year-old. He told reporters, “Right now it’s all about testing the hamstring. You know, you take three weeks off of seeing a live arm, it’s going to come at you fast when you get back in there. Now it’s just about getting more at-bats and just trying to get that timing back.” He stressed the importance of getting live plate appearances in games in order to be ready to get back to where he needs to be.

Kingery said that the organization is taking him day-by-day, but do not expect it to be too much longer until he returns to Philadelphia. He said the hamstring felt “really good” and “normal” on Thursday night. These words from Kingery are clearly an encouraging sign. He will play in Reading again on Saturday evening, but if all continues to go smoothly, “Scotty Jetpax” should be back in the Bigs and looking to continue his solid sophomore campaign very soon.
