Greensboro Swarm acquire player rights to former UNC standout Joel Berry II

The Greensboro Swarm acquired the returning player rights to Joel Berry II from the South Bay Lakers. The Swarm will be sending South Bay a 2nd round pick (40th overall) in the 2019 G-League draft in exchange for Berry II.

The 24-year-old Berry II spent his rookie season playing for the South Bay Lakers after going undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft out of North Carolina. In 21 games for South Bay, he played 22.4 minutes per contest averaging 11.1 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 rebounds per game.

Joel Berry II was a standout at UNC, including winning a National Championship his senior year while also being named the Final Four’s most outstanding player. Berry II was a 36.5 percent career three-point shooter at North Carolina and averaged a career high 17.1 points per game his senior year while adding 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Joel will see plenty of action in Greensboro this year where he will look to improve his NBA range and jumpshot after shooting just 26 percent last season. He has the potential and IQ to compete in the G-League and develop as a young player. Swarm head coach Joe Wolf is also a UNC alum, so I doubt he minds having another Tar Heel in the building.

Greensboro Swarm fans will be thrilled to have Berry II, as he is one of UNC’s more popular athletes over the past decade. The Field House will include plenty of carolina blue in support of their former star who brought them a National Championship.

The Greensboro Swarm kick off their season November 9th against the Erie Bayhawks. Their home opener is November 13th against the Westchester Knicks at home at the Field House at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
