Embiid Earns Player of the Month Honors

The Philadelphia 76ers just finished up an impressive month of January. In 15 games, they went 11-4. Six of those wins came against teams at the .500 mark or better and four came on the road.

Joel Embiid put together another tremendous month and it earned him Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors for the first time in his career.

Embiid is the first Sixers player to win the award since Allen Iverson in April 2005. Since the Conference Player of the Month Awards began in 1979-80, Embiid is just one of five Sixers to win it, joining Charles Barkley, Julius Erving and Moses Malone.

Over 13 games during the month of January, Embiid posted averages of 29.2 points, 13.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 blocks. He shot 48.8 percent from the floor and a season-best 34.6 percent from beyond the arc. Jojo tallied double-doubles in 11 of the 13 games.

January Highlights

January 2nd @ Phoenix:

The Sixers escaped with a five-point victory over the pesky Suns behind a dominant performance from Embiid. The big man finished the game by tying his season-high in points (42) to go along with 18 rebounds.

January 15th vs. Minnesota:

Embiid put on a show as his former teammates returned to town for the first time. He out-dueled Karl-Anthony Towns yet again and helped lead Philadelphia to a dominant 42-point victory that featured 149 points from the Sixers. Joel had 31 points on 10-for-17 shooting, hitting four of his six shots from beyond.

January 19th vs. Oklahoma City:

This game ended in heart-breaking fashion for the Sixers thanks to Paul George. Despite the loss, Embiid put together a strong performance against Steven Adams and the Thunder, letting his “rivalry” with Russell Westbrook fuel his game. Joel finished with 31 points, eight boards, six assists and just three turnovers.

January 21st vs. Houston:

The Sixers stymied James Harden and the Rockets, holding them to 93 points en route to a 121-93 victory. Embiid carried his momentum from the loss against OKC, scoring 32 points in addition to 14 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Joel shot 56.3 percent from the floor.

Don’t Forget About Ben

While Embiid took home the award for January, let’s not forget about how amazing Ben Simmons was during the team’s 11-4 stretch. Ben averaged 18.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 8.7 assists and 1.2 steals. He shot 56.4% from the floor and was officially selected to his first All-Star Game as a reserve.
